অশ্বগন্ধা
অশ্বগন্ধা আমাদের দেশের ভেষজ উদ্ভিদের মধ্যে অন্যতম। গাছের গন্ধ ঘোড়া বা অশ্ব এর মত বলেই সংস্কৃতে একে অশ্বগন্ধা বলে। বাংলায় ও আমার অশ্বগন্ধা-ই বলে থাকি। শক্তিবর্ধক হিসেবে এবং এ্যাফ্রোডেসিয়াক হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় বলেই ইংরেজিতে একে Indian Ginseng বলে। Solanaceae ফ্যামিলির গাছ অশ্বগন্ধার বৈঙ্গানিক নাম Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal. Withanine নামক রাসায়নিক উপাদান এই গাছ থেকে আলাদা করার কারণে এই গাছের নামে Withania নামকরণ করা হয়েছে। আর somnifera এসেছে somnifer থেকে যার মানে নিদ্রা আনয়নকারী। মূল এবং পাতা স্নায়ুর বিভিন্ন রোগে ব্যবহৃত হয়। এ গাছ বাংলাদেশ, ভারত, পাকিস্তান, শ্রীলংকায় পাওয়া যায়। নিদ্রা আনয়নকারী ঔষধ হিসেবে প্রচীন মেসোপটেমিয়া এবং মিশরে এর ব্যবহারের প্রমাণ পাওয়া যায়।
